The squall line that moved through Victoria late yesterday has brought
numerous reports of damage from Northern Victoria. The News this morning
described it as a severe electrical storm, with damage strectching from
Kyeton to Southern NSW. The worst hit area appears to have been Cobram near
the Murray, with reports of numerous houses losing their roofs. The SES was
run of it's feet.

It looks like there is the possibility of a repeat performance as another
strong front enters Victoria. It is currently moving through SA, and looks
very nice and radar and the sat pic.

Thursday 7:30am: 4 degrees. Winds, moderate westerly.

Very heavy rain here too in Blackheath overnight, only 6.5 mm in the
gauge, so it was obviously shortlived but when I woke up in the middle
of the night it was absolutely pelting down and howling and maybe small
hail too.

Wished I wasn't so sleepy as I was dying to know the max wind gust, it
really was very windy here. Had a quick look at Laurier's page but
couldn't see any wind speed reports for us here.

I heard a report on ABC news this morning of storm damage to a town on the

been able to find any information on the net so I wonder if any one else has

Seems last night's storm packed a bit more punch in Canberra than I
personally saw.

There are media reports that the "sudden" storm has resulted in a number of
instances of damage in Canberra's northern suburbs caused by wind (gusts up
to 85km/hr), hail (including roof tile damage) and blackouts. I recorded
9.5mm - most of which fell during the storm.

The use of the word "sudden" is bemusing. Like a number of members of this
list I had been watching this system on satellite and radar from early
evening (as well as for the last few days). It certainly gives greater
weight to calls for data such as radar to be made more widely (and freely
available to the public). Maybe on the new digital TV network?? (Would make
it less of a potential dud!! - a good topic for a strong rave for me on
another list!!)

The NTSC capable video player outputs to PAL, so a standard television
should be sufficient.

BTW, is there anyone else who will be attending on Sat who is from the SE
suburbs?

Dear all,

After my plea for the loan of an NTSC video player for Saturday
morning's meeting - which I have now found courtesy of our !new! 49th
ASWA Victoria member from the Mornington Peninsula, Simon;
after a bit more research, I now find (not being very up with this sort
of thing), that for Hamish Ramsay to be able to show his NTSC video of
the Oklahoma outbreak of May 3rd 1999) at the meeting, we also need a TV
that will receive an NTSC signal < ahem - my TV is just a **little** too
old >....so an update on the equipment situation as it is now follows:-

a) Simon will bring his NTSC video player
b) Hamish will bring his video of the May 3rd Oklahoma
outbreak,......but he'll just have to give a very animated talk (with
suitable tornado impersonations interspersed throughout <g> ) unless we
can find someone who...........
c) can bring an NTSC compatible TV (portable would be nice)!!!!!!!!!

HELP!!!!!

I hope this will be the last glitch....

please email me........ASAP if you can help out!

btw, while we're at this - will NTSC videos & TVs read PAL format?

Many thanks,

Jane

Morning all,

Second front came through Adelaide about 6.00am, so unfortunately it was
dark. Some very heavy showers, some minor flooding around town apparently.
No storms :(. Probably better action down south. Next substantial front
now seems to be Monday morning........

>Weight of a column of air..

Sorry to be pedantic but a couple of points.

1) weight is strictly a force, being mass*gravity, so the mass of air at
1000hPa is 9.8 N/cm-2 . It is interesting that weight has become synonymous
with mass in general language use.

2) the constitution of the atmosphere has no effect on the mass for a fixed
pressure as weight is just pressure*area.

The question about temperature is interesting, and probably best answered by
a physists. From 2) strictly speaking temperature has no effect, ie if P is
constant and area is constant then weight is constat. However for a given
quantity of air (number of molecules), the weight (and indeed mass) varies
with temperature, as temperature is related to the speed of movement of air
molecules, and mass is movement dependent through relativity. However, this
effect is very very very small. Also vertical acceleration can decrease the
weight of a column for a given mass, but again this is quite a small effect.

Cheers,

David.

It has also been very hot (by their standards) in western and central
Europe this week. It was 36 in Berlin on Tuesday, and 32 in London
on Monday; the London reading is the highest I can remember in June
since June 1976 (although I may have missed an event or two). Both
cities have got hotter in other months. I remember this particularly
well in Berlin, as they reached 38 on the day of the relay in the
1991 Junior World Orienteering Championships - I was running the
last leg (near the middle of the day), and towards the end caught
the British and USSR runners, took one look at them and thought
'I'm not going to see them again'. (I then got in to discover that
it had all been for nothing because our second runner had been
disqualified for going to a wrong control point...).

The British record high is 37 in August 1990, at Cheltenham in
central western England; London was 35 on this day. It's never been
over 32 in Scotland. Over continental Europe north of the Alps extreme
maxima are typically in the 35-39 range at low-level sites, except
at exposed coastal locations or a long way north (even the Scandinavian
capitals have reached the mid 30s). Except for a few very isolated
instances, you need to go south of the Alps to find anywhere that has
topped 40 (I believe the German record, for example, is either 39.8
or 40.2).

Around 9:00pm a storm passed through Northern Canberra and surrounds. It
produced continuous thunder and lightening and a small but powerful burst of
pea sized hail lasting for about 2-3 minutes. The hail was coming down at
45 degrees. I rang my folks who live near Murrumbateman to see if they got
anything and they had three storms, each with hail and some blackouts. Not
bad for a midwinter's night.

Greetings and thanks to all you enthusiastic weather people :]

My name is Shane Astridge and I live 30km west of Wagga. I'm 24 and work at
a nursery.

Before I go on, Congratulations Ira! Though I'm more than a little jealous.

We had a decent winter storm last night in Wagga. It was raining heavily
when I came out of the gym at around 7pm then a couple of minutes later the
CC's and CG's started (approx 10-15sec apart). I took a video tape back,I
was in the store when there was a blackout and the wind picked up
considerably. I was a bit nervous at being in a building with so much glass
and with the wind howling and gusting against the windows.Coolseason
tornadoes and horizontal hail came to mind ;] The blackout made it seem more
ominous with just a touch of mood lighting (green exit signs, etc)

My parent's property is in a reasonable area for spotting storms as it's on
a rise, most of the area is flat out west and we have little to obscure our
view in any direction. The most noteworthy storms I've seen are what I think
might have been the Finley area hail storm (last year) which had lightning
every 3-5 seconds and a very impressive anvil, and two storms on two
consecutive days in mid December last year while driving home from
Narrandera where I was working. Patrick Tobin may (or may not) remember
mentioning that there looked to be some action in the Wagga area. I ended up
driving (very cautiously) into the back of the first storm which had an
impressive rain curtain, blew down loads of twigs and medium sized branches
and had CG's which were only a couple of hundred metres from my car. The
second storm passed through precisely the same spot just east of Galore at
exactly the same time as the one the day before at 5:12pm I couldn't believe
my luck!! It was almost as impressive as the first.

I've had one very frustrating experience where I spent a couple of hours
watching low-mid level cloud come in from the north-west with fast vertical
development to cumulous then they just dissipated when they reached us. I
decided to go to see a movie in Wagga. At about 8pm there was a howling from
what I initially thought was the cinema next door and then water started to
pour down one side of the screen. It was the best storm we'd had in years
with 119km/h winds. It was a cluster storm associated with the Carrathool
races dust storm which I think made it onto an Australian weather calender.
Ironically the movie was 'As Good As It Gets'.

I hope this message isn't too long.
Regards Shane

Patrick...
We are all waiting for the Captains Flat radar to be up and running (and
available)... yes it is frustrating when information gained a taxpayers
expense (such as radar, hourly AWS data etc) could be provided to the
public at minimal (or almost zero) additional expense and it is not
becuase reasons that are beyond mere morals such as I.

Keep up your reporting to this list.
cheers,
don W

And let's not forget Sydney.... On Wednesday 21 June, Sydney's top of
22.1 was a new day record beating 21.3 in 1962... not bad for what are
beginning to think is a cold Winter.

to this afternoon, I instantly became aware of a tornado or perhaps even a
microburst in the north-eastern Victorian town of Cobram which lies along the
Victorian/NSW border (Murrey). Many homes were damaged along quite a long path
and width from intense gusts. CC's and CG's were witnessed associated with this
cell. Without anymore information, it is unwise to draw any hasty conclusions
this early. The Melbourne BoM said that the severe thunderstorm was associated
with a squall line passing through the area. Severe storms were reported. Other
news channels and radio stations have said that it was a "mini-tornado" as the
uneducated media seem to put it. It is evident that a number of cold air Cb's
have sprung up over the state yesterday and today which produced some very
interesting severe weather; i.e. hail, gusts CG's etc. It would be interesting

Report sent to me from Rutherglen in the NE of Victoria just
now.....currently.....

"There are storms developing all around here at the minute. One
developed about an hour ago to the west of here and slipped away to the
south. Can still see lightning flashes. A few to the west again now."

and if you're interested in what may just be the cloud that was
responsible for this afternoon's excitement, have a look at this image
courtesy of the CSIRO & Kim Badcock

http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/0622.htm

I'm going to see if I can get an enhanced image of this if someone can
tell me if I've got the right cloud - that's the one sitting up NW of
Bendigo on its own.....

I could see the reflected lightning from here, the escarpment was blocking
view of the Cb themselves. There appeared two main storm clusters ( from the
reflected lightning ), the one down Canberra way and another less active
more or less due west of southern Illawarra. The one due west had several
flashes that triggered other flashes right along the squall line just a
spilt second after the first.

Of course the line died around Goulburn after the Great Divide levels off.
Nothing made it through to Wollongong, not a drop.

Michael

34mm at Wangaratta AWS between 6 and 9pm falling in hourly amounts of
17, 10 and 7. A pretty respectable total for Wang.

Earlier, some good wind gusts in SA -- 115km/h on Neptune Island just
before 10am with a 10-minute sustained speed of 91km/h. And they
weren't confined to exposed coastal locations -- Strathalbyn recorded
94km/h at 6.23am and Roseworthy in Adelaide 85km/h at 11.30am
