I went down near the dam and measured a temperature of -4.6 definitely the coldest morning this winter. It was interesting watching the probe temperature vary as a light fog came through ie the temperature would fall a little. I have taken pictures but I know from experience frost is difficult to photograph for true white colour. This may be boring to some, but it's great to have a spell in mid-winter when you can put the washing out in the morning and it's dry by the end of the day, and when you can go outside in the sunshine. Still looking forward to proper wintry weather in the near future. Its confirmed as an F-0 tornado (again) Not alot of damage, bit of a roof off here, tree branches off there, ra ra ra. We get 5 or 6 of these every year so its hard to get too excited about them. The track runs for about three streets and I'd say most of the damage would have been from debri after the initial touch down. It would have been down on the ground for 2ish mins max. Basically it would have touched down as gone back up almost straight away. These type of tornado happen very fast, like the ones i saw two weeks ago. You have to see it to know what i mean. Its all over very quickly. Im abit spewing cause Im working in Kenwick atm which is all of 10k away from it and i started at 7:30am. The tornado was just after 7:00am. As i was driving down i did see the storm and stopped to take a few pics of it but i never saw the tornado. Bummer, oh well thats 5 reported naders here in WA 3 weeks, a slow start to winter but its picking up now. I know what you mean about the wankers. It's best to avoid the repeaters and just find a channel somewhere else. I used to find UHF was a good bit more civilised. With the abolition of compulsory licensing perhaps it's degenerated. Nowadays my 16 foot UHF aerial is just a lightning arrestor (so far hasn't been struck since 21st January 1991...!). Of course I guess one could use amateur radio but how many people would be qualified? If the storm chasers are in the country I doubt there would be as many fruitcakes on the CB there as there are in the city. Craig Williams (ASWA QLD) phoned me yesterday to inform me about an interesting event. He commented on the frequent and relatively close CG's that occurred. Of most importance, was the CG that struck a tree about 10m from his house!!! He said that he heard a large buzzing noise before the strike, then the flash and instantaneous and very loud crack! Craig mentioned that it appears the water inside of the tree boiled and exploded looking at the tree, he also noted that there were bits of bark impaled into the ground. The damage? A fried network card to the cable modem...one would automatically assume that the strike got into underground cabling - but, his cable modem is fine, and the same with his cable television decoder (all on the same line)...all perfectly fine! I would have expected the modem, the decoder, TV, Computer etc all to explode, or at least be damaged! Perhaps some one can comment on the possibilities here? The rest of his computer is fine...the modem is fine, but the network card is fried. Possible EMP??? (Speculating!) The probe was not in a Stevenson Screen but still about 60cm off the ground hanging on a dead plant. In the time I was down there, ice crystals developed on the probe.The ground temp was similar about -4.5C. The effects of the buildings meant that closer to the house and higher ground but still in the open, the temp was around -1.6 to about -2C. The frost was on all grass even on the roofs of houses. Quite a spectacular morning. Even from the amount of frost, it was a typical -4C observation. Just for interest sake, our place gets as high as 64m altitude but falls to about 30m in the valley part behind the dam. The frost was still on the grass at 8:30am but in the shade. Cars were going past on the road with frost on the roofs. And besides, I just checked the minimum for Richmond which was -4C.
