Hi all,

I can say that even though it must have had been very cold in some areas
this morning, I awoke and looked out the window - wiping the moisture from
the inside of the window and the lawn was bright white. I went down near
the dam and measured a temperature of -4.6 definitely the coldest morning
this winter. It was interesting watching the probe temperature vary as a
light fog came through ie the temperature would fall a little. I have taken
pictures but I know from experience frost is difficult to photograph for
true white colour.

It's interesting to see the effect the decaying cloud band had as it
passed Orange overnight. The city's minimum for the night (~minus 6.5)
appears to have occurred *before* the cloud band, at around 10pm. The
mercury then shot up to -1.5 at 10.41pm -- so sharply that the AWS
generated a SPECI or special weather report -- and briefly got above
zero at 11pm before dropping steadily to a second minimum of ~minus
5.5 at 4am.

Any of the locals care to comment?

hey all,
pleasant site this morning on the way to work, a cell way out in the ocean.
saw one flash of lightning just after six. the sun soon rose which
deminished any hope of seeing more. there are still cells east of here far
out in the ocean. some producing small anvils. its 12:30 right now. you can
see them on radar off coolangatta. gunna take some pics. will get the film
back today from mondays storms, will post the scans this arvo.
tuesdays report of a freak wind storm was just that. there were
suggestions that it may have been a waterspout coming off the nerang river.
the report came from a business in nerang who left no details at all. the
BOM nknew nuthing of it and the radio station couldn't tell me anything
either, although he sounded very interested in ASWA and would like to here
from me again about weather updates and chases so we could inform the gold
coast region of nearby weather events.
it seems as though it was just strong gusts coming down the hills. if it
were a waterspout, i'm sure we would've heard more.

Just saw the 1pm Channel 10 newsbreak, and their main story was about a
tornado hitting the Perth southern suburb of Thornlie.

They didn't say very much about it, as it was only a brief newsbreak, but
they said about 8 homes were damaged.

We're also getting close to our average July rainfall, and we're still in
the first half of the month, we've currently had 153.6mm this month, the
average is 173mm.

> Wed.

What's happened with the forecast cold outbreak that was (by Laurier's
notes) forecast to hit tomorrow?. Looking at the current SE Aus. forecasts,
it seems they're now only getting a 'cool' southwesterly airstream, with
snow only on the alpine areas.
No sign of any cold southerly over Christchurch at present. The high
remains immobile to the east of us, but the airflow has now changed from
easterly to northeasterly. Instead of the cold drizzle we had with the
easterlies, we now have mild sunshine (less of the air comes from the sea in
northeasterlies). This may be boring to some, but it's great to have a spell
in mid-winter when you can put the washing out in the morning and it's dry
by the end of the day, and when you can go outside in the sunshine. Still
looking forward to proper wintry weather in the near future.

I went to have a look at the damage today and I just spoke with the guys at
severe weather here at the Perth BOM. Its confirmed as an F-0 tornado
(again) Not alot of damage, bit of a roof off here, tree branches off
there, ra ra ra. We get 5 or 6 of these every year so its hard to get too
excited about them. The track runs for about three streets and I'd say most
of the damage would have been from debri after the initial touch down. It
would have been down on the ground for 2ish mins max. Basically it would
have touched down as gone back up almost straight away. These type of
tornado happen very fast, like the ones i saw two weeks ago. You have to
see it to know what i mean. Its all over very quickly. Im abit spewing
cause Im working in Kenwick atm which is all of 10k away from it and i
started at 7:30am. The tornado was just after 7:00am. As i was driving down
i did see the storm and stopped to take a few pics of it but i never saw
the tornado. Bummer, oh well thats 5 reported naders here in WA 3 weeks, a
slow start to winter but its picking up now.

I was watching perth radar and webcams when this tornado occured - and i
have to say i was amazed to hear this report when i got home this
afternoon... there was a distinct line of activity on radar, but geeze you
wouldn't think there would be a tornado in it! goes to show what extremely
high shear does

For those interested, here is all the stuff i saved (webcam images and
broad/local scale radar for the time the tornado occured)

Hi All,

Talked to my folks who happen to live in... Thornlie, Perth. They
knew nothing of this - so not in their part of Thornlie at least.

Mum said that they had a terrific storm this morning at about 7:00
am - one flash of lightning and one roll of thunder and a bit
of wind that blew all the dead leaves off the trees... Oh and some
rain. Dad said it was a bit of a fizzer after the warnings and
absolutely nothing like a tornado. My Aunt who leaves in another
part of Thornlie said it was nothing at all.

Well I guess they will be surprised when they watch the Ch 10 news
a bit later.

I must admit it's been a couple of years since I last used UHF and
probably 15 years since I used 27MHz so I don't know whether things have
got worse. I know what you mean about the wankers. It's best to avoid
the repeaters and just find a channel somewhere else. I used to find UHF
was a good bit more civilised. With the abolition of compulsory
licensing perhaps it's degenerated.
Nowadays my 16 foot UHF aerial is just a lightning arrestor (so far
hasn't been struck since 21st January 1991...!).
Of course I guess one could use amateur radio but how many people would
be qualified?
If the storm chasers are in the country I doubt there would be as many
fruitcakes on the CB there as there are in the city.

Jimmy , I presume that was the air (ie not the terrestrial minimum)
temperature? If so, how high above the ground was it?
Did you record a terrestrial minimum?

By way of unworthy comparison I had -3.6 on the ground here this morning
(I'm 83m above sealable) with a minimum of (+) 1.5 in the Stevenson
screen. Not the coldest on record for the grass but getting close for
the screen temp..

Hi all

I just finished adding a report to the video captures I uploaded. You can
go to my homepage and follow the links:
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm.html

or you can go directly to the report at
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm/reports/july10_00.html I'll
be adding links to future storm reports of this event as they come online.

I've also added a few photos to the October 13, 1998 Brisbane tornadic
supercell report - these were sent to me and are of a damaged warehouse at
Hendra:

Enjoy.

Hi all,

Took me a while to finally get around to writing this email! Craig
Williams (ASWA QLD) phoned me yesterday to inform me about an
interesting event. He commented on the frequent and relatively close
CG's that occurred. Of most importance, was the CG that struck a tree
about 10m from his house!!! He said that he heard a large buzzing noise
before the strike, then the flash and instantaneous and very loud
crack! Craig mentioned that it appears the water inside of the tree
boiled and exploded looking at the tree, he also noted that there were
bits of bark impaled into the ground.

The damage? A fried network card to the cable modem...one would
automatically assume that the strike got into underground cabling - but,
his cable modem is fine, and the same with his cable television decoder
(all on the same line)...all perfectly fine! I would have expected the
modem, the decoder, TV, Computer etc all to explode, or at least be
damaged!

Perhaps some one can comment on the possibilities here? The rest of his
computer is fine...the modem is fine, but the network card is fried.
Possible EMP??? (Speculating!)

Tony - do you know how the Energex network fared from the storms?

Hi Keith, I went down towards the dam which is lower than the house. The
probe was not in a Stevenson Screen but still about 60cm off the ground
hanging on a dead plant. In the time I was down there, ice crystals
developed on the probe. The ground temp was similar about -4.5C. The
effects of the buildings meant that closer to the house and higher ground
but still in the open, the temp was around -1.6 to about -2C. The frost was
on all grass even on the roofs of houses. Quite a spectacular morning. Even
from the amount of frost, it was a typical -4C observation. Just for
interest sake, our place gets as high as 64m altitude but falls to about
30m in the valley part behind the dam.

The frost was still on the grass at 8:30am but in the shade. Cars were
going past on the road with frost on the roofs. And besides, I just checked
the minimum for Richmond which was -4C.

John & all,

Re the discussion about CB use....I haven't found anyone using Channel
33 much at all anywhere in my travels (from W Victoria to Sthn
Queensland) ......and one of the best ways of discouraging 'wandering
chatter-upperers' btw is to let them know that you are currently in the
middle of discussing adiabatic lapse rates..about that point they will
ask you 'what the f%#* are they?" - and you never hear from them again!!

More resources for the intrepid chaser.....
A recently updated list of internet cafes around Australia can be found
at
http://www.netcafeguide.com/australia.htm

...and then there are the public libraries........

Carrying a notebook computer connected to a mobile phone is ok so long
as you have the money & the patience to cope with 9600baud speeds, and
connecting your notebook to someone else's phone line is ok if you offer
to pay their bill for the call, but remember that if using a landline in
a motel, the cost will go through the roof because they meter their
calls every 60 seconds but you will be able to download a heck of a lot
faster than with your mobile phone - it makes the <$10phr charged by the
internet cafes look very attractive!! The notebook is great as a
backup.....
