8.20am 19/11.

Well the rain has really started now, fog has come over Mt Panorama,
just about no visibility here. Helicopters continually flying over my
house on approach to Mt Pan landing pad. Im surprised they can see at
all with this shocking weather..

Macquarie River has risen since yesterday to 3.02 metres. Minor flood
level, one road would sure to be closed in centre of town now..

Hi All,

It was a mixed bag sort of day on Friday, I had to unfortunately work up
until 1:10pm which was just in time to see the approaching storm.

During the day cumulus clouds were increasing in size and numbers and you
could just feel something was going to give. At work I had a pretty good
view to the north and west. At this stage I would like to thank Paul Yole
for his updates during the day. There were some very heavy looking clouds
to the West which produced heavy rain and possible hail at Pt Adelaide and
Largs. Although the main feature was a very dark horizon growing bigger and
bigger from the north.

The Thunderstorm was getting closer and was headed straight for the
Parafield area, I was happy I was about to leave work. After leaving work I
drove to pick up Kathryn, and then drove home to get the equipment. By this
time it started to rain. There was a nice looking Guster to the front of
the cell which looked okay, but it was right over head. We decided to goto
the local lookout at Wynn Vale and watch the storm from there. There was a
blanket of rain about to hit Parafield, with Lightning every few seconds or
so. Mainly CC type lightning with the odd CG. Thunder was almost heard
constantly at one stage, it was good to be in it again. Rain fell over Wynn
Vale which lasted what seemed to be forever. Murphey was present aswell, a
nice CG had hit just South of Parafield but I had the video camera pointing
in the wrong direction, another CG had hit North of Parafield on the back
end of the storm. At this stage the storm was raining it'self out and dying.

We decided to head back home after the storm had passed and checked the
Observations etc.. Parafield recorded 20.2mm of rain out of the one storm
which wasn't a bad effort to say the least. Convection around the place was
still good although new developments South of Mt Lofty looked hopeful for
more storms, but it never happened.

With almost a week and a bit of cumulus growing in the afternoon and
looking quite solid, I guess something had to give eventually.

Hi all,

Jimmy Deguara, Nick Moir, Geoff Thurtell and Mark Dwyer have been chasing
in two vehicles and have stayed last night at Bourke in NW NSW.

Yesterday gave them a lot of rain from Sydney to Dubbo, but it was clearing
further NW enticing them in that direction. A large band of strong
thunderstorms developed on a NW-SE line but unfortunately they ended up
under the precipitation rather than watching the leading edge advance
eastwards through N NSW.

This morning skies are clearing though there is a lot of cloud N of them,
but fairly clear to the W. Jimmy reports weak congestus forming already
(10.40am). They are positioned in the southern-most area of -6 LI, should
see some action this afternoon.

regards, Michael

Hi all

Macca's crew are still at Cunnamulla this morning(12:35pm NSW time), after a
quiet morning. Still cloudy there but starting to break up with the temp
rising to around 28C and the DP on 23.5C. If they stay west of the huge
cloud mass over S central Qld, they should be alright today, maybe not as
active as yesterday, but you never know. Their plan at this stage is to make
it across to the southeast of Qld by Monday afternoon to get the trough
there, so I don't think they'll be staying too far west all day today.

Hello dencot!

18 Nov 00 04:33, you wrote to Aussie Weather Mail-Post:

I can help here.

If you're using 27 MHz CB, then there's no problem, you can use channel 33.
However, if you're using AM, then you might annoy the SSB operators, because
there's a general tendancy (dunno if it can be called a gentlemens agreement
these days) to use AM on the lower channels (up to around 20 or so) and SSB on
the higher channels.

On UHF, it's a little different. The channels 1 - 8 and 31 - 38 are assigned
to repeaters in pairs. 1 and 31 are paired up for a channel 1 repeater, 2/32,
3/33, etc.

A repeater listens on the higher channel of its pair (31 - 38, known as the
input channel), and if there is a signal, it simultaneously relays that signal
out on the lower (1 - 8, known as the output channel) channel of its pair.
Channel 33 is the input channel of the 3/33 pair, and if you're talking to
other chasers on 33 UHF, you may be unknowingly interfering with a channel 3
repeater somewhere and annoying a lot of people, who are further frustrated, by
not being able to tell you you're causing a problem! And, as someone pointed
out, this sort of operation within range of a repeater may be illegal (I
haven't read the CB LCD for a while).

Anyway, hope that clears up things a bit.

Hi Tony,

33 is not illegal, but it DOES interfere with the Channel 3 repeater, as it
is the duplex side of that repeater. the actual channel 1s 3/33.
So anywhere from 31 to 38 inclusive are the duplex side of repeaters.

Max

Yeah well a shame nothing much happens in Adelaide.

Damn wind change. If the wind change hadn't come through Adelaide around
midday we almost definately would have seen a thunderstorm. There was some
very intense convection developing near Mt Lofty but in the end that got
blown north east when the wind change developed now everything has dried up
apart from in the north of Adelaide. Not only did the wind change wreck any
potential thunderstorm activity but it didn't even cool things down much the
temperature infact rose after the wind change came through to nearly 34
degrees, it will have more of an impact tonight and tomorrow though. Will
Adelaide ever see a decent thunderstorm near the city before next year? I
really am starting to wonder?!?

Hey S G,

Are you not able to chase the storms ?

Seems to have been some nice action too far away - are the roads poor out
that way?

cheers, Michael

The SA Lightning tracker looks fine for me. Could be your ISP proxy server.

Those Thunderstorms North of Adelaide this afternoon were quite nice, I
managed to get close to 4 of the cells which were dumping a huge amount of
rain, hail, and Lightning. Although they did not make it to the Adelaide
CBD, it only took 20 minutes or so to get to them, and they lasted for
ages. The storms appeared to be almost stationary for at least an hour or
so which made it easy to sit on the side of the road and enjoy the show.

I guess you missed the Thunderstorm last Friday aswell SG, maybe if the
storms don't come to you, you may have to goto them.

Either way, it's not something we would want to encourage. Visions of chasers
meing chased by hordes of angry CBers comes to mind. ;-)

I must pull out the LCD one day, I recall seeing words to the effect that
"these channels may be used for simplex when not in range of a repeater..."
Will have to look it up. :-)

Just had a quick scan through the dewpoints at around 7pm. Hard to find many
below 15C, those that are are located in the Riverina and lower west.

Here in Wollongong the temp is 18.9 with DP of 18.4. The cloud that has
persisted most of day has a base of only about 150m, creating fog problems
for motorists along the Illawarra escarpment. There has been very fine
drizzle on and off for most of the day, so fine that radar cannot detect it.

<DIV>Charleville&nbsp;has&nbsp;actually broken the November 24 hour rainfall

Hi all,
i just got a phone call from a mate of mine holidaying in vic atm. He was
travelling on the A30 approx 20k's from Shepperton when he saw a wall cloud
on a cell. Hes not a chaser but is well educated on storms and what to look
for. Anyway he mounted a small chase and after getting closer he stopped he
said he then saw a a funnel extend about halfway to the ground. Hes pretty
sure the tornado was on the ground for approx 5mins. He got within about
500m of it, said there was hot air rushing in from behind him and he got
the shit blasted out of him right after it. Sounds like he was right in
there. He took pics the whole time and he will send me a copy of the pics
soon. He was pretty excited about it all. I hope this hooks him as he
reckons the whole thing was the most awesome thing he has ever experienced.
Im not sure if this was the same cell as the other reported nader or not
but he said it was just before dark (i think). Thought the Vic ppl might
wanna know.
